Background
Melton City Council is revitalising Springbank Park to provide a variety of play experiences for a broad range of ages and abilities.
What We're Doing
We’re upgrading the play space at Springbank Park with brand new, modern equipment so families have an even better place to play, explore, and enjoy the outdoors.
To make this happen, the playground will be closed until late June 2026 while construction is underway.
We’re also thinking of adding a new basketball key, and we want to know what you think.
Share your thoughts by completing the survey. Your feedback will help shape the final design
Community Engagement Summary
We asked the community to complete a short survey to share their thoughts on a proposed basketball key at Springbank Park.
While some residents took the opportunity to chat with us at the on-site pop-up session, most people chose to provide their feedback online. In total, 31 people completed the survey.
The results showed that:
- 71% supported the installation of a new basketball key
- 29% did not support adding a basketball option in this space
Overall, the feedback shows strong support from the community for this new addition to Springbank Park.
Strong support for a basketball court
Many people shared their enthusiasm for including a basketball space in the park.
Residents raised concerns about potential noise from the basketball area and asked for ways to reduce it.
In response, the chosen basketball unit includes a noise-reducing backboard. We will also look into suitable surface materials that can help minimise sound and improve safety by reducing the risk of injury.
Some community members suggested installing toilet facilities instead of a basketball key.
As Springbank Park is classified as a local park, toilet facilities are not planned. Local parks are designed for nearby residents, typically within walking distance. Toilet facilities are generally considered in larger, district-level parks.
A few people raised concerns about vehicles entering the park.
While this is outside the scope of the current project, we will explore options to limit vehicle access through other initiatives.
We’d like to thank everyone who took the time to share their feedback. Your input helped us understand whether a basketball court would be a valuable addition for the local community.
Based on what we heard, Council will be moving ahead with the construction of the basketball court.
We will now work with the designer to refine the basketball key design, taking your feedback into account. Once the updated design is complete, it will be handed over to the construction team to prepare for delivery.
