Project Background
As our community grows there is a need to upgrade the road network.
As traffic on Coburns Road increases with the anticipated population growth, it will become increasingly difficult for residents that use Scarlett Oak Avenue, to exit onto Coburns Road. As a result, there will be traffic congestion which will cause delays and create safety risks for road users.
There is no proper connection to the existing shared users’ path and no formal pedestrian crossing to navigate the intersection.
What We're Proposing
Council is proposing to upgrade the current 'T' intersection at Coburns Road and Scarlett Oak Avenue in Melton West, by constructing a new roundabout.
The upgrade will encourage better traffic flow, reduce congestion, and improve road safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
A roundabout has been identified as the most suitable option because:
- vehicles turning out of Scarlett Oak Avenue would be able to find suitable gaps and enter Coburns Road safely and comfortably.
- it would slow traffic, improving safety for pedestrians.
- it would reduce queuing on Scarlett Oak Avenue.
- it would improve the overall operation of the intersection without restricting movement.
- it could be constructed under traffic management with minimal disruption.
Benefits
🚧Improved Safety: a roundabout:
- improves the safety of all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists
- addresses current gaps in the shared path connection and improves the safety of the pedestrian crossing.
- supports the replacement of the existing shared path with a wider shared use path and raised pedestrian crossing enhancing safety for road users.
🟢Reduce Delays: the construction of a roundabout will help control traffic flow and reduce delays.
Impacts
The project would see the construction of a large roundabout in an existing intersection. The roundabout has been designed to accommodate the proposed, future duplication of Coburns Road.
The size of the roundabout and associated works will require the removal of two rockwalls linked to the estate, a mature gum tree and will impact the dry creek in the area.
Council is committed to engaging with the local community and impacted businesses. Have your say on the initial design and timing of works for this project. Your feedback will help us finalise the design and understand what is important to the community. Have your say by:
