Project Background

The roundabout at Caroline Springs Boulevard and Rockbank Middle Road is currently one of busiest intersections in the City of Melton. There are traffic delays at the roundabout and there are safety concerns for pedestrians and cyclists.

The roundabout will be upgraded to a signalised intersection to improve the flow through the intersection. The improved safety for cyclists and pedestrians should encourage more active travel.

The project will include:

  • An expansion and realignment of the road
  • Traffic signals
  • Landscaping
  • New public lighting
  • Underground services relocations (electricity, water, gas, and communications)

The project is valued at $5.4M and construction is expected to begin late 2021 and be completed by mid 2022.

Frequently asked questions

During works we will minimise disruptions as much as possible and expect that intermittent lane closures will be required.

The majority of the work will occur during work hours, however some night works will occur to avoid having to close multiple lanes during peak traffic times. A curfew will be imposed on the noisiest machinery to avoid disruptions to sleep.

Lane closures will be communicated ahead of time through electronic sign boards to help you plan ahead.

We will work with Public Transport Victoria (PTV) to minimise disruptions to bus services. PTV will let passengers know of any changes to service.

Mitigating damage and avoiding tree removal is always a priority for us, however to complete these works, several trees will need to be removed. We have experimented with reducing the length, width and alignment of the new lanes to mitigate losses, and the current plans show the smallest road footprint possible while still allowing the intersection to function well into the future.

This project does not include duplication of Rockbank Middle Road, west of this intersection. We see this portion of road as a necessary upgrade in the medium term and expect it will be upgraded in 5-10 years.

Due to complicated nature of construction works which will be carried out under live traffic conditions, the works are expected to be completed in 6 to 12 months.
