Why Trees Matter in Our Community

Trees play an important role in making our city a better place to live. They help keep our homes and streets cool, improve the air we breathe, and support a healthy environment. They also make our neighbourhoods more attractive and can even increase property values.

What We're Doing

Council is developing a plan to better manage and grow our urban trees so everyone can enjoy these benefits. This work will focus on trees on public land such as streets, parks, and council car parks.

What the plan will include

We’ve identified some key issues and are working on practical actions to address them, including:

  • A clear vision and goals for our urban trees
  • Targets for increasing tree canopy cover and diversity
  • A plan to prioritise where new trees should be planted
  • Updated guidance on the best tree species to use
  • A “green streets” initiative to create cooler, greener streets
  • Recommendations to improve existing policies and processes
  • A prioritised 4-year action plan
