Project Background

Melton City Council is installing a roundabout at the intersection of Boundary Road and Troups Road South/Davis Road, Truganina during the January 2026 school holidays.

The new roundabout will replace the existing four-way intersection to improve traffic flow and enhance safety by reducing vehicle speeds and lowering the risk of collisions.

Given the constraints of the site and safety considerations for road users and workers, the intersection will be closed from Monday 5 January 2026, reopening in time for the start of the school term on 28 January 2026 (subject to weather).

Community Engagement Summary

Between 18 November to 2 December 2025 Melton City Council consulted with the community on the traffic management arrangements during the closure. Feedback was collected via an online form which was promoted via a letter distributed to residents, email to stakeholders and social media.

In total, 15 people provided feedback. Below is a summary of the feedback that was collected and Council’s response.

  • We asked about your feedback on the traffic management arrangements during the temporary road closure of the Boundary Road, Troups Road South/Davis Road intersection while we install a roundabout.

A preference for traffic lights with turning lanes

Council completed an extensive review of options before developing the proposal. A roundabout was chosen based on the following:

  • Safety and traffic flow: Modelling shows that a roundabout provides safer operation and more efficient traffic flow than traffic lights at this intersection.
  • Traffic lights would take 3–4 years for approvals and 9–12 months to construct, with significant traffic disruption. The roundabout can be built in approximately three weeks, scheduled over the school holidays to minimise impact.
  • Site constraints: The road reserve is narrow, with environmental, cultural heritage, and geotechnical restrictions, plus underground services, all of which make traffic lights complex and require land acquisition. The roundabout fits within the existing road footprint, avoiding these delays.

Concerns about the road closure impact on road users

We have taken advantage of lower traffic volumes during the January school holidays to deliver this project within a relatively short timeframe to minimise disruptions to road users while we construct the roundabout.

Concerns around wildlife

Traffic speeds will be reduced to 60 km/h at the intersection with raised platforms at all entrances. This will help make this intersection safer for road users and wildlife. Council will install kangaroo warning signage along Boundary Road as part of the Mt Atkinson–The Mall corridor project.

Works will commence on Monday 5 January 2026 and are expected to be complete by Wednesday 28 January 2026.

A detour route will be in place via Dohertys Road, Hopkins Road, Greigs Road and Mount Cottrell Road. There are additional roads available to avoid the intersection and we encourage road users to plan ahead.
