Project Background

Melton City Council manages local roads.

Developers sometimes need to close part of a road so they can complete works safely. When this happens, they apply to Council for approval.

Council has received a request from Coles Group to close Banks Drive in Diggers Rest. Coles Group is building the new supermarket and other shops in the Diggers Rest Town Centre.

The road needs to close so crews can:

  • rebuild the road to handle more traffic
  • add a raised pedestrian crossing to improve safety
  • install drainage under the road

Because this work involves digging up the road, the closure needs to stay in place for the whole construction period.

What We're Proposing

Banks Drive will be temporarily closed to allow important road upgrades that will improve safety and support increased traffic to and from the town centre.

The works will include:

  • Rebuilding the road surface to handle higher traffic volumes
  • Upgrading drainage to reduce flooding and water issues
  • Improving traffic management, including installing a raised safety platform to help slow vehicles

The works involve deep excavation (more than 500mm), including work on the road and underground drainage. For safety reasons, the area must be fully closed off to protect both drivers and pedestrians.

🚧Temporary closure is planned for 10 weeks, from:
Monday 29 June to Friday 4 September 2026

(weather and construction progress permitting) The timing has been planned to start during the winter school holidays to reduce disruption, as traffic volumes are typically lower during this period.

We understand closures can be inconvenient and appreciate your patience while these improvements are completed.

Impact on traffic

The closure of Bank Drive, Diggers rest will see traffic detoured via Aviation Drive and Civic Road. Please view the detour map below.
